City of Tramelan – CI/CD
September 2007 - onlab creates the new corporate identity and the new visual language of the city of Tramelan in Switzerland.
Tramelan is a city situated in the Bernese Jura, in the industrial tradition and culture of watch making and engeneering in Switzerland where Nicolas Bourquin grew up. Since 25 years, Tramelan is shrinking. In 2004, onlab was hired to take part in the commission examining the identity and development opportunities of Tramelan as advisors in the field of communication. The commission, delivered a report analyzing the current (infra-)structural, political, economic, social, and cultural situation of the village and its local, regional and national image as well as its self-perception.
Following this report which was to deliver the basis for extensive restructuring measures, onlab was commissioned in 2006 to develop a new visual identity and communication strategy for the village for the years to come. In September 2007, the results of this project were presented to the population and the press, the new strategy will successively be implemented.

Medias, part of the new visual identity of the city of Tramelan

Based on the typefaces originating in the industrial tradition and culture of watch making and engeneering, onlab designed an exclusive typeface which is derived from the typeface “Lutz”.

The first visual identity of Tramelan was introduced in 1441 and is an adaption of the armoral bearings of the local duke. Over the centuries, different versions of the emblem with the three linden leafs emerged. In 1954, the council of Tramelan defined the emblem by nothing more than a sentence according to the heraldic tradition. This leaves a certain space for interpretations of the emblem.
The new emblem is based on the new created “Tramelan-Lutz” typeface. This solution gives a strong uniformity to the signs system.

1. Three linden leaves are composing the emblem.
2. The central linden leave is rotated to the right...
3. ...to create the “TR” sign...
4. ...”TR” for “TRAMELAN”.
One additional element of the new visual identity is the diagonal, taked from the emblem. This basic element gives to the communication a strong identification value.
