On the occasion of Jeanno Gaussi’s first institutional solo show at Syker Vorwerk – Center for Contemporary Art (November 8th, 2015 – January 3rd, 2016) we put together the pieces of her manifold work and designed a book providing an overview over her installations and performances, sculptural objects and conceptual image series.
Gaussi’s work transcends boundaries both in an medial and thematic way. While examining concepts of remebrance, identity, and the social and cultural processes associated with them, her artistic work often emerges from an intense observation of and play with the hidden and overseen. Ornaments and traditional materials, iconic symbols and detached family photographs are transformed into an artistic language that explores indeterminate spaces and times, while embodying the personal and social dynamics of diaspora, often starting by the artistic exploration of the places Gaussi has worked and travelled.
Born in Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1973, Gaussi has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the dOCUMENTA (13) and the 12th Havan Biennale. She lives and works in Berlin.
